The Role
What you'll do on assignment.
As a travel step-down/progressive care nurse, you manage patients requiring intermediate-level monitoring between ICU and med-surg — including continuous telemetry, post-ICU step-down patients, and those at risk for clinical deterioration. Your cardiac monitoring expertise and assessment skills bridge the gap between critical and acute care.
Travel PCU assignments typically place you in dedicated progressive care or telemetry units within hospital systems. You may manage post-cardiac procedure patients, titrate IV drips, interpret rhythm strips, and recognize early signs of clinical deterioration requiring ICU escalation.
Because Cuready understands healthcare professionals, your recruiter knows the difference between a true PCU with continuous monitoring and a busy telemetry floor. They match you to assignments that align with your step-down experience and patient acuity comfort level.

Training & Education
Your path to the field.
From nursing school to intermediate critical care — what the professional journey looks like for progressive care nursing.
Your recruiter knows this pathway.
Because Cuready is built by healthcare professionals, we understand what each credential means and how to match your training to the right assignments.
Step-down/PCU nurses hold an ADN or BSN from an accredited nursing program. Programs cover cardiac monitoring, pharmacology, and patient assessment alongside clinical rotations. Many PCU nurses transition from med-surg or gain experience through hospital-based telemetry training programs.
The base credential is an active RN license (state or compact). The PCCN (Progressive Care Certified Nurse) from AACN demonstrates specialized progressive care competency. ACLS is universally required for step-down assignments.
