The Role

What you'll do on assignment.

As a general diagnostic medical sonographer, you use high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of internal organs, soft tissue, and blood flow. Your scans help physicians diagnose conditions, monitor pregnancies, guide procedures, and more — and your clinical judgment is integral to every image you produce.

Travel GS assignments most commonly place you in hospital radiology departments or outpatient imaging centers. Depending on your credential profile, you may rotate through abdominal, OB/GYN, small parts, and superficial structure scanning across a single 13-week contract.

Because Cuready specializes in sonography, your recruiter understands the difference between a generalist and a subspecialist. They fight for assignments that match your actual skill set — not just whatever slot needs filling.

Training & Education

Your path to the field.

From accredited programs to clinical readiness — what the professional journey looks like for general sonography.

Your recruiter knows this pathway.

Because Cuready is built by healthcare professionals, we understand what each credential means and how to match your training to the right assignments.

General sonography requires completion of an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) program. Most travel assignments expect at minimum an Associate's degree, though many facilities prefer a Bachelor's.

  • CAAHEP-accredited DMS program (Associate's or Bachelor's)
  • Clinical rotations in ABD, OB/GYN, and vascular imaging
  • Alternative pathway: cross-training from radiologic technology with additional DMS coursework
  • Program length: 2–4 years depending on degree type

The ARDMS is the primary credentialing body for sonographers. Most travel positions require at least one active registry in good standing before placement.

  • RDMS — required for most general sonography assignments
  • Specialty registries: ABD, OB, BR, MSK, PS, and more
  • RVT or RDCS for vascular and echo crossover roles
  • All credentials must remain current throughout the length of your assignment

Maintaining ARDMS credentials requires ongoing continuing medical education (CME). Staying current protects your license and keeps you competitive for top assignments.

  • 30 CME credits required per 3-year renewal cycle per ARDMS credential
  • Accepted sources: SDMS, ACR, AIUM, and other ARDMS-approved providers
  • Webinars, conferences, and employer-sponsored programs all qualify
  • BLS/CPR renewal required every 2 years — most facilities verify on arrival

Travel positions expect you to be productive quickly — typically within the first week. Cuready evaluates readiness before placement to ensure a strong match with the facility's acuity and workflow.

  • At least 1 year of post-graduation clinical experience (2+ preferred by most facilities)
  • Familiarity with major platforms: GE, Philips, Mindray, Siemens
  • Independent scanning without daily supervision
  • Ability to complete studies and finalize images without radiologist oversight
